Hero Down: Maricopa County Sheriff’s Lt. Chad Brackman Killed While Directing Traffic

Scottsdale, AZ – Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Lieutenant Chad Brackman died in the line of duty Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle while directing traffic.

The 47-year-old lieutenant was directing traffic near the intersection of McDowell Road and 87th Street when he was struck by a motorist at approximately 10 a.m., KNXV reported.

Lt. Brackman was rushed to HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver who crashed into him was also injured and was transported to the hospital for treatment, KNXV reported.

Details regarding how the incident occurred have not been released.

The Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) is handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal collision.

Lt. Brackman served the MCSO for 22 years, KNXV reported.

Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone said he knew Lt. Brackman personally and described him as “a very good man.”

“He has a beautiful family, and they are all suffering now, as is our organization and law enforcement community,” Sheriff Penzone said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, according to KNXV.

Lt. Brackman leaves behind his wife, two children, and two stepchildren, the Associated Press reported.

A procession for the fallen lieutenant was held on Wednesday evening, according to WYFF.

The MCSO and the Memorial Fund will host a charity car wash for Lt. Brackman’s family on Friday, the department said in a Facebook post.

“Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” Sheriff Penzone wrote in another post earlier in the day.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey ordered flags be lowered to half-staff on Nov. 12 in Lt. Brackman’s honor.

“The entire State of Arizona mourns the loss of @mcsoaz Lieutenant Chad Brackman,” Ducey tweeted on Wednesday. “He served our state honorably and showed a deep devotion to public safety over his 22 years of service. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Chad Brackman, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
