Clayton, GA – Macon County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Corporal David Head and his wife, Dawn Head, died in a five-vehicle crash on May 23.
The 46-year-old deputy and his 50-year-old wife were riding their Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Georgia 15 at approximately 4:25 p.m., when 22-year-old Tristan Bartlett crossed over the center line and into their lane, The Clayton Tribune reported.
In addition to the motorcycle and Bartlett’s 2006 Jeep Commander, three other vehicles were also involved in the fatal collision, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Bartlett was transported to Mountain Lakes Medical Center with minor injuries.
Two occupants in other vehicles also suffered minor injuries.
Cpl. Head and his wife were pronounced dead at the scene, Now Habersham reported.
Bartlett has since been charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular homicide.
Cpl. Head served in the United States Navy prior to his service with MCSO, according to his obituary.
“David was a good man and a dedicated law enforcement officer who served his community with distinction,” Macon County Sheriff Robert Holland told The Highlander. “More times than not, he was the kind of man that would tell you he loved you as he left you in a conversation. He and Dawn will be truly missed.”
The couple leaves behind four children, ages 13, 17, 17 and 19, according to a fundraising page established to help them in the wake of their tragic loss.
“The struggle has been very real for our agency and it’s a great loss to us all, but our hearts and our sympathy go out to those who loved David and Dawn the most – their children and their families,” Sheriff Holland told The Highlander.
The couple was laid to rest on May 28, WLOS reported.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Macon County Sheriff’s Office Corporal David Head and his wife, Dawn Head, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
