Hero Down: Lyon County Deputy Stephanie Schreurs Killed In On-Duty Crash

Lyon County Sheriff's Deputy Stephanie Schreurs served her department for 24 years.

Sioux Falls, SD – Lyon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Deputy Stephanie Schreurs died in the line of duty on Tuesday, four days after she was gravely injured in a one-vehicle rollover crash.

The 60-year-old deputy was traveling on county road K52 near 160th Street in Rock Rapids, Iowa, at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 9, when her patrol SUV failed to negotiate a curve in the road, the Sioux City Journal reported.

The 2018 Ford Explorer veered off into the ditch, vaulted over a driveway, and rolled over, according to the N’West Iowa Review.

The patrol unit was lying on the driver’s side when it came to rest on a gravel road, KCRG reported.

The veteran deputy was not responding to an emergency when the collision occurred, according to the N’West Iowa Review.

“Deputy Schreurs sustained incapacitating injuries and was flown by air ambulance to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for injuries sustained in the accident,” the LCSO said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

“The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened to report that in the early afternoon hours of August 13th, Deputy Schreurs succumbed to her injuries,” the department said.

The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) is handling the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fatal collision.

“Please keep the Schreurs family and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” the ISP said in a statement, according to the N’West Iowa Review.

The 24-year veteran-of-the-force leaves behind her four children, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Stephanie Schreurs, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
