Louisville, KY – Louisville Metropolitan Police Department (LMPD) Officer Hassan Hassan died unexpectedly after suffering a medical emergency on April 2.
The 25-year-old officer was off-duty when the medical episode occurred, according to the Courier Journal.
Officer Hassan was rushed to the hospital, where he passed away “despite lifesaving-efforts by medical staff,” the LMPD said in a statement.
The department did not release any information regarding the nature of the medical emergency.
Officer Hassan “joined the LMPD family” on June 22, 2020, the department said in a Facebook post on April 3.
He was promoted to the rank of officer on Feb. 12, and was subsequently assigned to the Fourth Division.
“He was dedicated to the community and embraced by his peers during his short time there,” the LMPD’s post read. “Officer Hassan’s service, commitment and dedication to our profession will remain a testament to his personal strength!
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer issued a statement expressing his condolences in the wake of the young officer’s sudden death.
“Deepest condolences to Officer Hassan’s loved ones, and his @LMPD family,” Fischer tweeted on April 2. “Let’s keep them in our thoughts tonight.”
The Louisville Metro Police Foundation also spoke about Officer Hassan in a Facebook post on the afternoon of his death.
“We are heartbroken over the unexpected loss of Officer Hassan Hassan,” the foundation’s post read. “He was so excited to be sworn in as an LMPD Officer on February 12 and was dedicated to serving his Louisville community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
