Hero Down: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Jonathan Buchan Kills Himself At California Bar

Santa Clarita, CA – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Deputy Jonathan Buchan fatally shot himself at a bar on Jan. 20.

The incident occurred at Mabel’s Roadhouse located on the 26300-block of Bouquet Canyon Road shortly before 1:30 a.m., KABC reported.

The 33-year-old off-duty deputy was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, according to SNBC.

Deputy Buchan was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined he died by suicide, KHTS reported.

“Our hearts are aching for this young man’s family and the grief he must have been enduring,” the bar said in a statement, according to KABC. “Please seek guidance if you or anyone you know is in crisis.”

Deputy Buchan served four years in the U.S. Marines and served two tours in Afghanistan prior to joining the LASD, his father, Ken, told The Santa Clarita Valley Signal.

He was a member of the LASD College of the Canyons Training Academy Class #443, which graduated on Jan. 10, 2020, the department said in a Facebook post at the time.

“In a special segment of the ceremony, Jonathan W. Buchan, LASD, was named as the class Honor Recruit,” the sheriff’s office said. “This award is earned by the recruit who achieved the highest numerical average based upon leadership qualities, academics, marksmanship, and physical performance throughout the training period.”

Deputy Buchan worked at the North County Correctional Facility before completing his field training program at Century Station, according to a fundraising page established to help his family in the wake of their loss.

“Deputy Buchan was a man of honor, and displayed morality in everything he did,” the page read.

Donors have contributed more than $42,000 to the fund so far.

Deputy Buchan is survived by his parents.

He will be laid to rest on Feb. 13, according to his memorial page.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Jonathan Buchan, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
