Hero Down: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department K9 Jack Fatally Shot During Armed Standoff

Gardena, CA – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) K9 Jack was fatally shot in the line of duty on Dec. 22 while trying to apprehend a barricaded suspect.

The series of events leading to the six-year-old Belgian Malinois’ death began on Dec. 21, when a man living in the 1800-block of West 145th Street allegedly shot at someone during an argument, KABC reported.

The unidentified suspect – a male in his 60s – then proceeded to barricade himself inside his apartment for nearly 36 hours as police tried to convince him to surrender, according to investigators.

Officers forced entry into the residence at approximately 5:42 p.m. on Dec. 22 and were met by gunfire, KTLA reported.

Police said one of the bullets fired by the suspect fatally wounded K9 Jack as he was assisting in the apprehension.

The gunman was also killed by gunfire during the shootout, KTLA reported.

“We lost one of our partners today,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna tweeted the following morning. “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of beloved Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) K9 Jack.”

“K9 Jack was tragically shot and killed by a violent armed suspect during a tactical operation in Gardena,” Sheriff Luna continued. “K9 Jack’s actions saved the lives of numerous members of the Bureau during the operation.”

K9 Jack joined the LASD nearly four years ago after previously serving with the Naval Special Warfare Development Group as a military working dog, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Sheriff Luna said K9 Jack, who was born in the Netherlands, was a social dog who had the “heart of a warrior.”

“K9 Jack was not only part of the @SEBLASD family he was a beloved member of his handler’s family,” the sheriff wrote. “K9 Jack will be sorely missed by his family, @SEBLASD and all of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in the loss of K9 Jack.
