Hero Down: Los Angeles County Detective Steven Lim Dies In Crash After Suffering Medical Emergency

West Carson, CA – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Detective Steven Lim died in a motor vehicle crash after suffering a medical emergency while driving home from work on Jan. 15.

Det. Lim was driving eastbound on Carson Street in the area of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center at approximately 10 p.m. when he suffered an unspecified medical emergency and crashed near Vermont Avenue, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Det. Lim’s exact cause of death was not immediately released.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced the longtime detective’s death the following day.

“It is with our most profound sorrow that we announce the sudden loss of a family member, Steven J. Lim, a Special Victim Bureau detective and 26-year veteran of LASD,” Sheriff Luna tweeted.

“He was an exemplary detective who handled the most severe child abuse cases,” Sheriff Luna noted.

Hundreds of people offered their condolences to the LASD and Det. Lim’s family in response to the agency’s announcement.

“[Det. Lim was] one of the greatest detectives I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,” one message read. “A team leader, and a friend. He exemplified what service to the community means. Protecting the most vulnerable of victims. I miss you Steve!”

Another person said he met Det. Lim through sporting events their children participated in together.

“Great guy and father. Down to earth and very humble. So sad for his family, LASD lost a great one.. RIP Steve,” he wrote.

Det. Lim leaves behind his wife and five children, according to Sheriff Luna.

He Is also survived by his parents and his sister.

“We at @LASDHQ will always be there for his family,” the sheriff wrote.

Det. Lim’s funeral was held on Thursday.
