Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Deputy Jeffrey McKee died on March 28, after a tire flew off of another vehicle and slammed into the windshield of his car.
The collision occurred on Interstate 5 in East Los Angeles as the 35-year-old off-duty deputy was traveling in his Volvo S40 at approximately 5:30 a.m., NBC News reported.
He had just finished his night shift at the Los Angeles Inmate Reception Center and was on his way home at the time.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said a tire suddenly flew off of a Toyota Tundra and came crashing into the roof and windshield of Deputy McKee’s vehicle.
The deputy suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota was uninjured in the incident, according to NBC News.
After smashing into Deputy McKee’s car, the flying tire bounced out in front of another vehicle being driven by 57-year-old LASD Deputy Norman Anpree, according to the CHP.
Deputy Anpree was not injured in the initial crash and got out of his vehicle, but ended up being hit by his own car when another motorist crashed into the back of it, NBC News reported.
Deputy Anpree was rushed to a local hospital with major injuries.
He “faces a long road to recovery,” the LASD said, according to NBC News.
The department announced Deputy McKee’s death in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
“Deputy McKee committed his professional life to Los Angeles County and protecting its citizens,” the department said. “The LASD family mourns the loss of Deputy McKee. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Deputy McKee began his LASD career in 2006.
He was most recently assigned to the Inmate Reception Center as a scheduling deputy, according to his department.
Deputy McKee leaves behind his wife and two children.
A fundraising campaign established to help Deputy Anpree and the family of Deputy McKee has raised over $9,400 so far.
