Hero Down: London Police Department Officer Logan Medlock Killed By Drunk Driver

London, KY – London Police Department (LPD) Officer Logan Medlock died in the line of duty on Sunday after an impaired driver barreled through a stop sign and slammed into his patrol car, according to investigators.

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) said the 26-year-old officer was traveling southbound on South Main Street when the fatal collision occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on Oct. 30, WLKY reported.

According to investigators, an alleged drunk driver traveling north on Kentucky Highway 229 ran a stop sign and collided with Officer Medlock’s patrol vehicle, shoving it into a nearby cemetery, the Officer Down Memorial Page reported.

Several headstones were damaged in the collision, according to WKYT.

Officer Medlock suffered severe injuries in the wreck and was pronounced dead at the scene, WKYT reported.

The driver of the suspect vehicle, 36-year-old Casey Byrd, did not suffer any injuries, according to WKLY.

Investigators said Byrd had been watching the Kentucky-Tennessee football game at a friend’s house earlier in the night, WKYT reported.

His Breathalyzer sample registered at .294, which is more than three times above the legal limit, police said.

Byrd was booked on charges of driving under the influence and murder of a police officer, WKYT reported.

His bond was set at $1 million.

Byrd’s preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 8, according to WKYT.

He identified himself as a federal officer during his initial court appearance, but it is unclear which agency he works for, LEX reported.

The KSP’s Critical Incident Response Team is handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal crash, WLKY reported.

LPD Chief Travis Dotson confirmed Officer Medlock’s death in an emotional press conference later Sunday morning, according to WKYT.

“Logan was an outstanding police officer,” Chief Dotson said. “We are heartbroken. I want to thank KSP and the sheriff’s office for stepping up and helping us at this time.”

Officer Medlock served the department for three years and previously served one year as a Laurel County Correctional Center correctional officer, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

He is also the son of LPD Assistant Chief Randy Medlock, WKYT reported.

Chief Dotson said the young officer’s death has left the LPD in shock and disbelief.

“It’s a great loss for this community, and we will never forget him,” he said, according to WKYT.

Officer Medlock leaves behind his wife, Courtney, and his five-year-old son, Brantley, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his parents, brother, grandparents, uncle, aunt, in-laws, and many friends and extended family members.

Officer Medlock will be laid to rest on Nov. 4.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of London Police Department Officer Logan Medlock, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
