Holly MatkinBooneville, AR – Logan County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Detention Sergeant Christopher Elliott died in an off-duty crash on June 21.
The 35-year-old detention sergeant was a passenger in a 2015 Jeep traveling eastbound on Highway 10 when the driver, 33-year-old Jimmy Lee Rhoades, attempted to pass a 1993 International truck at 6:40 p.m., The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.
As he was passing, the International turned left, resulting in the Jeep colliding with it and veering off down an embankment, according to the Arkansas State Police (ASP).
Rhoades was transported to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith with unknown injuries, KNWA reported.
His condition was not released.
Detention Sgt. Elliott died of his injuries.
“With very sad tidings, we announce that one of our own, Detention Sergeant Christopher Elliott, died while off-duty in a vehicle accident west of Booneville on State Highway 10 earlier this week,” the LCSO said in a Facebook post on June 24.
Detention Sgt. Elliott worked for the LCSO for two years and was serving as a night shift sergeant at the time of his death.
In addition to his role with the sheriff’s office, Detention Sgt. Elliott was also a Blue Mountain Fire Department volunteer firefighter, according to his obituary.
“He has trained numerous detention officers and will be remembered as a strong leader and a good friend,” the LCSO said. “We miss our friend and fellow officer and we are praying for his family and friends.”
Detention Sgt. Elliott leaves behind his wife, Amy, and his children, Dustin, Liam, and Jessica, according to his obituary.
He is also survived by his parents, brother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.
Detention Sgt. Elliot was laid to rest on June 27.
