The incident started about 3:00 p.m. Tuesday January 17, 2017.  Little Elm Police Officers responded to a residence in the 1400 block of Turtle Cove Drive to a report of a man with a gun.  Upon arrival to the residence, Little Elm Officers found the suspect screaming in the back yard and holding a gun.  When the Officers commanded him to drop the gun, the suspect ran back inside the residence.

The Little Elm Officers moved to the front of the residence, still giving commands.  The suspect began firing at the Little Elm Police Officers at about 4:00 p.m. from inside the residence.  Lt. Orlando Hinojosa of the LEPD said that Detective Walker was shot in the upper body at this time.  Other Officers were able to get to him and he was taken by patrol car to a safe area, then transferred to a Careflite helicopter and transported to  Denton Regional Medical Center.  A witness who lives nearby said that she heard 40 – 50 shots coming from inside the residence.

Detective Jerry Walker was an 18-year veteran of the Little Elm Police Department.  He was promoted to the rank of detective in 2013. Detective Walker also served several years in the Army.  Rodney Harrison, Little Elm Police Chief, said “He was a model officer and someone who will be missed by the department and here in the town of Little Elm.”  Detective Walker was the father of four children, ranging in age from 22-years-old to 2 months, according to Dallas News.  Officers stood outside of the hospital and saluted as his body was carried out.  Bagpipes were played.

The shooter remains barricaded inside the residence in an ongoing standoff with police.  An elderly relative of the shooter has been successfully rescued from the residence and it is believed that the shooter is alone inside the residence.  Nearby homes have been evacuated.  Schools that were in the area were initially placed on lockdown but that has since been lifted.  Residents are being asked to avoid the area.

We send our thoughts and prayers to the family of fallen hero Little Elm Police Detective Jerry Walker.  Godspeed, sir, we will take it from here.  Thank you for your service.
