Lakeland, FL – Lakeland Police Department (LPD) Sergeant Travis Miller died on Jan. 19 after a battle against cancer, according to his department.
The LPD announced the 43-year-old sergeant’s death in a press release later that day.
“It is with great sadness that we announce Sergeant Travis Miller passed away this morning after a hard-fought battle with cancer,” the department said. “Travis was a dedicated husband, father, veteran and police officer who will truly be missed.”
Sgt. Miller, a Tampa native, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 2000 and served as a military police working dog handler and trainer during his active-duty service.
He joined the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) in 2005 where he spent time working as a SWAT team member, street training instructor, patrol officer, general crimes detective, K9 handler, and Proactive Community Attack on Problems Unit member, according to the LPD.
Sgt. Miller came to the LPD in 2014.
He was a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the SWAT team during his eight years of service with the department, and also worked as a patrol officer and field training instructor.
Sgt. Miller devoted 22 years of his life to his law enforcement career.
“Rest Easy Friend,” the LPD said. “Travis you were simply the best. It was an honor to serve alongside you. Thank you for your leadership, your friendship and your service to both our country and our community.”
“Please keep all who love him in your thoughts and prayers,” the department added.
Sgt. Miller leaves behind his wife, Rebecca, as well as his children, Troy and Isabella, according to his obituary.
He is also survived by his brother, Derek, and his father, Thomas.
Sgt. Miller was laid to rest on Jan. 26.
