Hero Down: LA County Probation Dept. DSO Michael Wall Dies Of Heart Attack After Chasing Down Suspect

Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles County Probation Department Detention Services Officer (DSO) Michael Wall died in the line of duty on April 30 after suffering a heart attack while stopping an inmate assault inside juvenile hall.

The 49-year-old DSO was working at Central Juvenile Hall located at 1605 Eastlake Avenue when a juvenile offender attacked another inmate inside a facility classroom, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Two juveniles fled the scene of the “mob attack,” including the instigator, and ran out into a field outside the facility, police said.

DSO Wall was able to apprehend and restrain the primary aggressor just before the medical emergency struck, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

He collapsed into his fellow DSO’s arms.

“Probation employees and Juvenile Court Health Services employees rushed to his aid and began CPR,” Los Angeles County Probation said in a press release.

DSO Wall was rushed to a local hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

He passed away during the procedure, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

The veteran DSO’s cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrest, according to his obituary.

“Today is a sad day,” Los Angeles County Chief Probation Officer Adolfo Gonzales said in the press release. “We lost Detention Service Officer Wall, who died while in the line of duty while caring for the youth in our care.”

DSO Wall served the department for 14 years.

He always strived “to serve as an empathetic counselor and a role model to youth offenders under his charge,” his obituary read.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the Wall family, loved ones, fellow officers, and the entire Probation Department staff,” Chief Probation Officer Gonzales said. “DSO Wall was a dedicated guardian of justice. He will be missed. I join all our Probation family and Department staff members as we all mourn our colleague. Please reach out if you need support as we are here to help each other.”

DSO Wall leaves behind his 14-year-old daughter, Aubrey, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his brother and three sisters.

DSO Wall will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Los Angeles County Probation Department Detention Services Officer Michael Wall, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
