Jefferson Hills, PA – Jefferson Hills Borough Police Department (JHPD) Officer Dale Thomas Provins died in the line of duty on June 13 due to injuries he suffered during a head-on crash 10 days earlier.
The 50-year-old officer was traveling northbound on Old Clairton Road at approximately 8:15 a.m. on June 3 when a southbound vehicle crossed over the centerline and slammed into his patrol vehicle head-on, KDKA reported.
Both drivers were trapped inside their mangled vehicles and had to be extracted by first responders, Jefferson Hills Police Chief Gene Roach told KDKA.
Officer Provins was airlifted to a local hospital, where he spent the next 10 days fighting for his life.
He succumbed to his injuries on June 13.
The driver of the second vehicle was also hospitalized due to the collision, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
That person’s condition is unknown.
The South Hills Area Council of Governments Crash Team is handling the ongoing investigation into the deadly collision, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Officer Provins, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Kuwait and Iraq during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, served the JHPD for 15 years, according to his obituary.
He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and served several other local departments prior to his career with the JHPD.
“The Jefferson Hills Police Department mourns the loss of Officer Provins,” Chief Roach said in a statement to KDKA. “Dale’s colleagues in the Department and in the Borough admired him, his sense of humor and kindness. Losing one of our own is extremely difficult. Our condolences go out to Dale’s family and friends, we share in their grief.”
Officer Provins leaves behind his fiancé, Michelle, his daughter, Mariah, and his stepdaughter, Chelsea, according to his obituary.
He is also survived by his parents, siblings, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
