Hero Down: Hopkins Police Det. Kevin Hegyi Killed By Motorist While Bicycling

Hopkins Police Detective Kevin Hegyi served his department for seven years.

Rogers, MN – Hopkins Police Department (HPD) Detective Kevin Hegyi was fatally struck by a vehicle while bicycling early Sunday morning.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m., as the 45-year-old off-duty detective was riding in the westbound lane of Industrial Boulevard, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported.

An unnamed female driver driving in the same lane crashed into Det. Hegyi, who was unresponsive when first responders arrived at the scene.

The seven-year veteran-of-the-force was pronounced dead at approximately 1 a.m.

The investigation into the fatal collision is ongoing, and police said that the female driver has been cooperative.

“We regret to inform our community of this tragic loss,” the Hopkins Police Department (HPD) said in a Facebook post on Monday. “Kevin was a great asset to our department and community. Please keep his family, friends and our department in your thoughts.”

Det. Hegyi served as a field training officer, and also led the HPD’s SWAT team, Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson told KSTP.

“He had many accommodations and awards with this department, including life-saving medals,” Chief Johnson said.

Hopkins Police Sergeant Mike Glassberg said that Det. Hegyi was a perfect fit for the HPD.

“He stood out like ‘Wow this guy’s life experience,'” Sgt. Glassberg explained. “He’s been in the community, down-to-earth guy, and we grabbed him up. He’s an amazing, amazing guy.”

Det. Hegyi was especially proud of his three teen sons, and spoke of them constantly, the department said.

“He set an example of how to be dad,” Sgt. Glassberg said. “A lot of us who have children respected him because of that…He was amazing with his kids – always, always was talking about his kids.”

A fundraising account established to help establish a college fund for Det. Hegyi’s three boys has raised over $18,000.

In addition to his children, the veteran detective leaves behind his sister, Vicki, and many relatives and friends, according to his obituary.

Det. Hegyi will be laid to rest on Friday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hopkins Police Department Detective Kevin Hegyi, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
