Hillsboro, NH – Hillsboro Police Department (HPD) Officer Rory Bohanan died in the line of duty on Tuesday after suffering a medical emergency, according to his department.
Officer Bohanan was working at the Hillsboro-Deering High School as a school resource officer when the medical episode occurred, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.
He was planning to retire from his law enforcement career on June 30, the HPD said in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon.
“It Is with a heavy heart that Chief [David] Roarick of the Hillsboro Police Department announces the passing of Officer Rory Bohanan,” the agency’s post read. “The men and women of the Hillsboro Police Department extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, family, and friends during what is a difficult and painful time. We will all miss ‘Officer Bo’ very dearly.”
Officer Bohanan’s “lifetime of service” began in 1981, when he joined the U.S. Navy, according to the HPD.
He was hired by the New Hampshire Department of Corrections in 1987, and began serving as a part-time police officer in 1998.
After finishing first academically in his police academy class, Officer Bohanan worked for the Henniker Police Department and the Hopkinton Police Department.
He then joined the HPD as a school resource officer for the Hillsboro-Deering School District.
“It was in this role that Officer Bohanan exhibited his excellence and merit,” the HPD said. “Guiding students, he not only ensured their safety, but he was also a respected mentor to so many.”
Officer Bohanan was also heavily involved in the annual Special Olympics Torch Run.
A vigil was held at the Hillsboro-Deering High School athletic field in his honor on Wednesday night, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.
