“He was a true hero,” the tribute read.

More than 700 people extended their condolences to the HCPD and Officer Padgett’s family in response to the department’s Facebook post about his tragic passing.

One woman said the veteran officer is “absolutely precious” to her family.

“We had the unfortunate experience meeting him on several occasions with our son. His heart and convictions led my son to jail, rehab and now our boy is doing amazingly well!” she wrote. “Officer Padgett was a 10 chance kind of guy as far as dealing with youth and was such a gentle yet firm man. He gave solid, relatable advice. My heart hurts that he is gone. Praying huge for his family and fellow officers!”

“We will miss you George,” another message read. “Thank you for being the best neighbor and friend. Prayers for his family. To know him was to love him, he was just a good soul, a friend to all.”

Officer Padgett was laid to rest on Oct. 21.
