Galt, CA – Galt Police Department (GPD) Officer Harminder Grewal died in the line of duty on Thursday due to injuries he suffered in a head-on, line-of-duty crash on Aug. 22, according to his department.
The horrific collision occurred at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Aug. 22, as Officer Grewal and his partner, GPD Officer Kapri Herrera, were responding to help the Caldor Fire Department in El Dorado County, the GPD said in a press release at the time.
The officers were traveling northbound on Highway 99 when a vehicle came barreling over a temporary construction barricade and slammed into them head-on at a high rate of speed.
The driver of the oncoming truck was pronounced dead at the scene, KTXL reported.
He was later identified as 25-year-old Manjot Singh Thind, according to The Sacramento Bee.
Two passengers in the truck were injured in the collision and transported to a local hospital in unknown condition, KTXL reported.
Officer Grewal and Officer Herrera had to be extricated from the wreckage, according to The Sacramento Bee.
They were both rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, the GPD said.
“Doctors and hospital staff have worked tirelessly to stabilize Officer Herrera and Officer Grewal,” the GPD said in an update post on Monday afternoon. “As of this morning, Officer Herrera remains in ICU and is listed in critical, but stable condition. Officer Grewal remains in critical condition in the ICU.”
Officer Herrera suffered “major facial injuries” in the collision and will need to have multiple surgeries in the future, her family told KTXL.
The investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing.
Officer Grewal, a two-and-one-half-year veteran of the GPD, succumbed to his injuries on Aug. 24, the GPD said in a follow-up post on Friday.
“He made the ultimate sacrifice while performing his duties as a public servant, responding to danger,” the agency said. “Officer Grewal took pride in serving his community and his work ethic was contagious to all who worked with him. His service to our community will never be forgotten.”
Officer Grewal leaves behind his parents, brother, and countless friends, family members, and loved ones.
“Please keep his family, friends, GPD family and all those impacted by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers,” the GPD said.
