Columbia County, GA – Fulton County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Anthony White was killed in the line of duty on Tuesday when his vehicle crashed with a tractor-trailer on the way to pick up an inmate for transport.
Georgia State Patrol Lieutenant Stephanie Stallings said the wreck occurred at about 11 a.m. on Sept. 29 on Interstate 20 East near the Groveton exit, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Lt. Stallings said Deputy White and Fulton County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenny Ingram were en route to Augusta to pick up an inmate when their Dodge Charger hit the back of a semi truck that had stopped for traffic.
Georgia state troopers and Columbia County sheriff’s deputies responded to the fatal crash, WAGA reported.
Deputy White and Deputy Ingram were both pronounced dead at the scene, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said both deputies were assigned to the Law Enforcement Division of the sheriff’s department, the unit responsible for transporting inmates to and from the county jail.
Deputy White was an almost eight-year veteran of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“These men had a profound sense of duty throughout their distinguished careers with this agency and for us and this county, the loss of these deputies is devastating,” Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson said in a post to the department’s official Facebook page.
Sheriff Jackson called the deputies “outstanding.”
