Detroit, MI – Detroit Mounted Police (DMP) Police Horse Remi died unexpectedly on April 18.
The DMP confirmed the death of the 14-year-old Percheron/Morgan-cross in a press release later that day.
“We are deeply saddened to say that we lost 1 of our great mounts this morning,” the mounted police wrote.
Police Horse Remi served the DMP for six years.
“Remi along with his rider, Officer Matthew Miller, were a great team,” the agency said. “You could catch the 2 of them in Greek Town, Mexican Town, visiting kids at schools, football games and leading parades with their assigned beat Downtown.”
Police Horse Remi stood proudly at 17 hands and weighed more than 1,800 pounds.
“His stature was a perfect fit for controlling crowds when needed and his gentle demeanor and beauty suited those that wanted to pet him and pose with him for pictures,” the DMP said.
“Thank you Remi for your dedicated service,” the mounted police concluded. “Rest in peace big boy.”
Police Horse Remi’s exact cause of death was not immediately released.
Well over 200 people offered their condolences to the DMP and Officer Miller in response to the department’s announcement.
