Hero Down: Delaware State Police Sgt. Rodney Bond Dies On Run With Son

Sgt. Bond is a 14-year veteran who collapsed while running with his son and died.

Middletown, DE – Delaware State Police Sergeant Rodney Bond, Jr., age 40, died unexpectedly near his home on Friday evening, November 24. He was off-duty at the time.

Sergeant Bond was running with his son when he collapsed, and it is believed that he died of a heart attack, according to The News Journal.

Delaware State Police Superintendent Colonel Nathaniel McQueen, Jr. asked the community to keep Sergeant Bond’s family and members of the Delaware State Police in thoughts and prayers as his loss is mourned.

In a statement, Colonel McQueen said “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the tragic loss of Sgt. Bond. He was an outstanding Trooper and was committed to serving the citizens of Delaware with dignity and pride. He made all of us proud to be Delaware State Troopers. As we mourn the loss of our fellow Trooper, we ask the community to keep his family and the members of the Delaware State Police in your thoughts and prayers.”

Sergeant Bond began his career with the Delaware State Police in September, 2003, with the 74th Delaware State Police Recruit Class, according to the DSP web site. He was assigned to Troop 2 during his Field Training Officers’ program, and was permanently assigned to uniformed patrol after completing his training.

In April, 2012, Sergeant Bond was assigned to the Human Resources Recruiting Unit at Headquarters, before transferring back to Troop 2 in 2014. In 2015, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and transferred to Troop 1 as shift supervisor.

On April 30, 2017, Sergeant Bond transferred back to Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Unit and was assigned as the School Resource Officer Supervisor. He was transferred throughout the division during his career to other part-time duties including Trooper Recruiter, TAC (Trainer Advisor Counselor) at the Training Academy, and as a member of the State Police Honor Guard Unit of which he proudly and honorably served since May, 2006.

Sergeant Bond was a 14-year-old veteran of the Delaware State Patrol.
