Waldorf, MD – DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Detective Timothy Francis was fatally shot by his wife in an apparent murder-suicide on Nov. 27, according to police.
Charles County sheriff’s deputies responded to the Marylea Court home of 50-year-old Det. Francis and his wife, 41-year-old Christina Lynn Francis, after Christina’s father found the couple dead inside their residence shortly before 6 p.m., WTTG reported.
Investigators said they believe Christina murdered her husband, then turned the gun on herself.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is handling the ongoing investigation into the case, WTTG reported.
Det. Francis, a 20-year veteran of the MPD, was assigned to the department’s Homicide Unit Natural Squad, according to WUSA.
“Mourning the tragic loss of our colleague and friend is extremely difficult,” MPD Chief Peter Newsham said in a statement on Saturday. “Detective Francis spent two decades protecting the community from violence, and to learn that he was the victim of a homicide is heartbreaking.”
Det. Francis was the son of a 45-year MPD veteran, according to the DC Police Union.
“Tim was one of the best detectives in CID. His father was also a detective that worked nearly 45 years for MPD,” the union tweeted on Saturday. “Tim was a stand up guy that always held his ground. We are all still reeling from this news. The MPD has lost a true detective today and he will not soon be replaced.”
Justin Dillon, a former federal prosecutor, said he worked alongside Det. Francis from 2009 through 2013, The Washington Post reported.
“He was smart, he worked hard, and he had a soft touch,” Dillon said.
As a result, people were often willing to speak with him – even in places where “nobody wants to talk,” he noted.
“That is not easy in certain parts of the city,” Dillon explained. “Everybody trusted him.”
Det. Francis’ neighbor, Demetrius Wilson, said the veteran officer “was a family man” who “loved his kids,” WUSA reported.
“He loved life,” Wilson said.
