The 37-year-old officer’s exact cause of death was not publicly released.
“With heartfelt sadness, we regret to announce the unexpected passing this morning of Danbury Police Officer Andrew Katkocin,” DPD Detective Lieutenant Mark Williams said in a press release later that day. “Andrew was a 12-year veteran of our department who was well-liked and respected by his peers and supervisors alike.”
Det. Lt. Williams offered his condolences to Officer Katkocin’s family on behalf of the DPD.
“Our deepest sympathy is with Andrew’s family and loved ones. His passing is a stunning blow to his brother and sister officers at the Danbury Police Department, who will miss him deeply,” he wrote. “As we are all in mourning, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.”

The highly-decorated officer “loved being a police officer and serving his community,” the tribute read.
“Andrew…you were not just one of ‘the good ones’…. you were one of the best ones,” a tribute on his memorial page read. “Your compassion for others, your steadfast love of family, your pride in your profession….your quiet sense of humor…I remember your respect for those less fortunate that you that you encountered in your daily work. So much strength, goodness, compassion and kindness.”
