Hero Down: Coventry Police Lieutenant Gary Miller Succumbs To Cancer

Coventry, RI – Coventry Police Department (CPD) Lieutenant Gary Miller died on May 30 after a brief battle against cancer.

The 49-year-old lieutenant passed away with his wife by his side, according to his obituary.

The CPD confirmed Lt. Miller’s death in a Facebook post later that day.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and co-worker LT Gary Miller,” the agency’s post read. “Gary was the epitome of a great cop, family man and friend.”

“Words cannot express the deep loss we all feel as LT Gary Miller was taken from us all far too soon,” the CPD said in a follow-up post on June 3. “Gary was more than a great cop. He was a husband, a father, a son, a brother, and a self-proclaimed ‘expert fisherman.’ His love of family, nature, and law enforcement will forever touch those who loved him.”

Lt. Miller served the CPD for nearly 23 years, according to his obituary.

He was most recently assigned to the administrative services unit, where he was tasked with “crafting policies and procedures that were as solid and steady as he was during his over 22 years of service to the Town of Coventry and the State of RI,” the police department noted.

Lt. Miller also served as the department’s lead firearms instructor and as the West Warwick/Coventry Regional SWAT team leader for many years.

He leaves behind his wife, Diane, and his children, Hope Marie and Mary Ellen, according to his obituary.

A fundraising campaign established to help his family in the wake of their loss has raised over $45,000 so far.

“Gary, we love you brother,” the CPD said. “To Diane and your girls, we are forever here for you. Rest In Peace, 810, we have the watch from here.”

Lt. Miller was laid to rest on June 3.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Coventry Police Department Lieutenant Gary Miller, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
