Chicago, IL – Chicago Police Department (CPD) Officer Jeffrey “Jeff” Troglia died by suicide on March 5.
The 38-year-old officer fatally shot himself in the head in the basement of his Mount Greenwood home on Chicago’s Southwest Side, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Officer Troglia’s death came just days after fellow CPD Officer James Daly, a 21-year veteran of the department, also committed suicide.
“It is with deep sadness that for the second time this week, I must share the difficult news of the death of one of our own in what appears to be a suicide,” CPD Superintendent David Brown said in a statement, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the officer’s family and friends, who are now grieving over this unimaginable tragedy,” Superintendent Brown said. “This job is not easy and is more difficult than ever. To the men and women of CPD: I know that it’s hard to take care of yourself and reach out. And I hear that, and know we need to do more.”
Officer Troglia proudly served CPD for 15 years, according to a fundraising campaign established to help his family in the wake of their loss.
The veteran officer leaves behind his wife, Julie, and his daughters, 11-year-old Frannie, three-year-old Madeline, and one-year-old Meghan.
He is also survived by his mother, siblings, and many friends and extended family members, according to his obituary.
“Jeff was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend,” the fundraising page read. “We are all shocked and saddened by his passing.”
Officer Troglia will be laid to rest on Saturday.
