Hidalgo County, NM – United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Border Patrol Agent Johan Mordan died in the line of duty while on foot patrol in a remote desert area on June 11.
The 26-year-old agent was out on patrol in the Bootheel of southwestern New Mexico when his fellow agents lost communication with him, the El Paso Times reported.
“A search ensued and, within minutes, responding agents found BPA Mordan unresponsive lying on a trail,” the CBP said in a press release on Saturday.
Agents immediately began chest compressions and requested air support to extract Agent Mordan to a hospital.
“Agents worked exhaustedly trying to save him,” the CBP said, “unfortunately BPA Mordan could not be revived.”
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the young agent’s cause of death.
Agent Mordan joined the CBP 11 months ago, and was assigned to the Lordsburg Station.
“It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Border Patrol Agent Johan Mordan of El Paso Sector,” CBP Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan tweeted on Saturday. “He served his country and community with honor. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and the entire Border Patrol community during this time.”
El Paso Sector Border Patrol Chief Gloria Chavez said that the agency “will forever honor” Agent Mordan’s sacrifice.
“We will never forget,” Chief Chavez tweeted.
