Shreveport, LA – Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) Auxiliary Deputy Lonnie Thacker died in the line of duty on July 23 while directing traffic at the scene of a crash, according to his department.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:56 a.m. as Auxiliary Deputy Thacker was assisting with traffic control at the scene of a prior crash on Interstate 49 North between Highway 50 and Highway 170, the CPSO said in a press release later that afternoon.
A passing Kia Sorento slammed into the driver’s side of his patrol vehicle, gravely injuring the 82-year-old lawman.
Auxiliary Deputy Thacker died at the scene.
The driver of the Kia was transported to Ochsner LSU Health with minor injuries, the CPSO said.
She was later identified as 21-year-old Madison Campbell, KTBS reported.
The Louisiana State Police (LSP) said they believe the crash was caused by distracted driving.
The LSP is handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal collision.
Auxiliary Deputy Thacker served the CPSO on a voluntary basis and without pay for 20 years, according to the department.
“The [Sheriff’s Auxiliary Program] enlists trained volunteers to assist in the Patrol Division and other areas of the department,” the CPSO said. “They receive no pay for their service. Thacker regularly logged over 500 volunteer hours a year.”
Auxiliary Deputy Thacker assisted patrol deputies with funeral escorts, traffic control, and neighborhood patrols, according to his department.
His supervisors said he was “passionate about litter abatement” and keeping his community clean, and that he also assisted with the department’s various youth programs.
“He was one of those all-around guys who if you asked him to do something he would do it, but he preferred being in a patrol car,” CPSO Sergeant John Hay said in the press release.
In addition to his two decades of voluntary service to the sheriff’s office, Auxiliary Deputy Thacker was also a U.S. Army veteran and retired Caddo Parish commissioner.
Auxiliary Deputy Thacker leaves behind his wife, Tomy, and his children, Lonnie and Loretta, according to his obituary.
He is also survived by six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his siblings.
Auxiliary Deputy Thacker will be laid to rest on Saturday.
