Burnet, TX – Burnet Police Department (BPD) Officer Jose Humberto Meza died in the line of duty after suffering a heart attack on Dec. 20.
The 30-year-old officer and his partner, K9 Kuso, had participated in a training together just hours before the medical emergency struck, the BPD said in a press release on Saturday.
Towards the end of the training session, Officer Meza told his colleagues that he was not feeling well, so he headed home, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
On the morning of Dec. 20, Officer Meza’s wife called 911 to get help for her husband, who was experiencing a medical emergency, the BPD said.
“On-duty BPD officers responded to Ofc. Meza’s residence and immediately began lifesaving measures on their coworker,” according to the department.
He was rushed to Seton Highland Lakes Hospital by ambulance.
“Despite the best efforts of the medical staff involved, Ofc. Meza passed away at the hospital shortly after arrival,” the BPD said.
The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office made a preliminary determination that Officer Meza died of a heart attack.
Officer Meza’s law enforcement career began in July of 2016, when he was hired as a deputy by the Llano County Sheriff’s Office, according to his obituary.
“Jose’s biggest dream was to be a law enforcement officer,” the tribute read.
He joined the CPD on Dec. 14, 2018, and his application to become a K9 handler was approved just six months later.
“[He] was granted the opportunity to go to work with his best friend, Kuso,” according to his obituary. “Kuso and Jose made the best team and they made many arrests together.”
Officer Meza leaves behind his wife of four years, Cristina, and their two-year-old daughter, Mia Isabella.
He is also survived by his parents, sister, nephew, and many friends and extended family members.
Officer Meza was laid to rest on Monday.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Burnet Police Department Officer Jose Humberto Meza, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
