Hero Down: Burlington County Sheriff’s Office K9 Scottie Succumbs To Cancer

Burlington County Sheriff's Office K9 Scottie was a rescue dog when he joined the department in 2012.

Mount Holly, NJ – Burlington County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) K9 Scottie died on Dec. 12, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, according to his department.

“It is with a heavy heart to inform everyone that our wonderful K9 Scottie has terminal cancer and worked his last shift today,” the BCSO said in a Facebook post one day earlier.

K9 Scottie joined the BCSO in 2012, after he was rescued from a shelter in Pennsylvania, the Burlington County Times reported.

He and his partner, BCSO Detective Christopher Snyder, completed nearly five months of explosives-detection training in April of 2015, and remained together for K9 Scottie’s entire career.

“He’s just a great partner,” Det. Snyder told the Burlington County Times. “His nose was just phenomenal up until the last training session that we had.”

The duo responded to numerous bomb threats and suspicious package calls over the years, and also conducted countless demonstrations throughout the community.

“Scottie was a rescue dog and was fortunate to find a loving forever home with his handler/partner/best friend, Detective Chris Snyder,” the department said in the post. “Scottie loves coming to work with his partner and using his nose to keep the occupants of the County Complex safe. He also loved assisting municipalities in the County with bomb calls and protective sweeps to keep all citizens safe.”

The 10-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever was a tireless worker, but also loved to play.

“Scottie was not all about work,” the BSCO said. “He also enjoyed using his voice to talk to anyone that would listen.”

Law enforcement officers lined up outside the Burlington County Superior Court on Dec. 11 to bid a final farewell to the beloved K9, NJ.com reported.

“Tomorrow Scottie will cross the rainbow bridge but he will never be forgotten,” the sheriff’s office said. “Thank you Scottie for your service!”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burlington County Sheriff’s Office and Detective Snyder in the loss of K9 Scottie.
