Holly MatkinBoca Raton, FL – Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Deputy Roberto Aspuru died on Tuesday night following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash.
The fatal off-duty collision occurred on South Federal Highway at approximately 9:44 p.m., the Miami Herald reported.
Deputy Aspuru, 54, was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.
The exact cause of the fatal collision remains under investigation.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of another member of our BSO family,” the BSO said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Deputy Aspuru served in the U.S. Marine Corps prior to joining the BSO in 1999.
He initially worked in the BSO’s Department of Detention, and crossed over to the Department of Law Enforcement in 2001.
Deputy Aspuru was quickly approaching his 21st anniversary with the department, the sheriff’s office noted.
“Throughout his career, he received numerous commendations and was known for his attentiveness and calm demeanor,” Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony said in a message to his staff, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
Deputy Aspuru leaves behind his wife, parents and siblings, the City of Tamarac tweeted on Thursday.
