Poteet, TX – Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Deputy Alan Perez died in a two-vehicle crash while he was off-duty on Dec. 9, 2022.
The 27-year-old deputy and his passenger, Jourdanton Police Officer Alexis Hernandez, were traveling near Poteet when the crash occurred early that morning, the Pleasanton Express reported.
Details regarding what led up to the deadly collision were not immediately released.
Officer Hernandez was hospitalized after the wreck, the Pleasanton Express reported.
Deputy Perez did not survive.
“I regret to report that Deputy Sheriff Alan Perez died in an off-duty traffic accident early this morning near Poteet,” Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward said in a press release later that day. “Our prayers are with Deputy Perez’s family and with the injured woman and her family, as well as the driver of the second vehicle.”
The Texas Department of Public Safety handled the investigation into the fatal crash.
“It was such a shock to everyone here at the Sheriff’s Office to receive this news,” Sheriff Soward told the Pleasanton Express. “Alan was well-liked by his peers and we are all praying for his family and the others involved in this tragic accident. This is never easy, but we have to get through it.”
Deputy Perez joined the ACSO in May of 2022.
He was also a U.S. Army veteran, according to his obituary.
“Alan took immense pride in serving others and defending his community,” the tribute read. “Alan will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him.”
Deputy Perez leaves behind his fiancée, Gabriela, as well as his parents, brothers, and many friends and extended family members.
He was laid to rest on Dec. 20, 2022.
