Gunman Opens Fire On Officer, Runs Himself Over With Own Car

Police said that Troy Lynn Lewis fired six shots at an officer in three seconds and then led police on a chase.

Huntsville, AL – A drunk-driving suspect ran over his foot with his own car as he tried to flee from a police officer whom he’d shot at on Thanksgiving night.

The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. on Nov. 28 when Huntsville police responded to the area of Triana Boulevard and Westmill Drive for a report of a suspicious man in a vehicle, WAAY reported.

Police said the first officer who arrived on the scene made contact with 65-year-old Troy Lynn Lewis and suspected he had been driving under the influence (DUI), WAFF reported.

The officer left Lewis sitting in his car and returned to his police vehicle to wait for backup.

That’s when the suspect pulled a handgun out of his pants pocket and started shooting, according to WAFF.

Police said that bodycam video showed Lewis fired six rounds at the officer in three seconds and the officer had no opportunity to seek cover.

The officer wasn’t hit but gunfire struck his the open door of his patrol vehicle at least once, WAFF reported.

Police said the officer did not return fire.

Then Lewis jumped back in his vehicle and fled, leading officers on a chase, according to WAAY.

The chase ended at the intersection of Leeman Ferry Road and Bob Wallace Avenue when the suspect jumped out of his car and tried to run.

Police said that Lewis failed to put his car in park when he bailed out and then ran over his own foot as he tried to get away, WAAY reported.

After he ran himself over, officers took Lewis into custody without further incident, WAFF reported.

The suspect was transported to the hospital and remained there for treatment of a pre-existing medical condition.

Lewis has been charged with attempted murder, WAFF reported.
