Gunman Opens Fire On Firefighters Responding To House Fire

A gunman opened fire while firefighters were putting out a house fire on Tuesday morning.

Los Angeles, CA – Firefighters were responding to a house fire in Los Angeles early Tuesday morning when someone inside the house started shooting.

Police told KCBS that a 16-year-old girl was fatally shot during the incident.

Firefighters heard the gunshots just as they finished putting out the flames in the two story structure on Redondo Beach Boulevard at about 4:30 a.m. on April 24, and were forced to back out of the house in the Harbor Gateway area and call for police assistance, CBS News reported.

They dropped their gear and hunkered down behind fire trucks as four to five shots rang out from the structure they’d been trying to save, KCBS reported.

The scene was labeled an “active shooter situation,” and the Los Angeles Police Department was placed on a tactical alert, CBS News reported.

There was a massive police response to the incident and officers could be seen taking cover behind a fire truck.

After a two-hour standoff, SWAT officers were able to take the suspect into custody. The suspect was rolled out of the home on a gurney suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, KCBS reported.

Los Angeles PD said no officers had fired their weapons during the incident.

Several homes nearby were evacuated during the standoff, KCBS reported.
