Gunman Opens Fire In Convenience Store, But Officer Was There To Take Him Out

A Shannon police officer fatally shot a gunman inside a Mississippi convenience store on Thursday morning.

Shannon, MS – A Shannon police officer was in the right place at the right time on Thursday morning to fatally shoot a gunman who had opened fire on a woman inside a popular Lee County convenience store.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson told reporters that the incident began shortly before 6 a.m. on Sept. 19 when a woman entered Griggs Store on Romie Hill Avenue screaming for help, the Daily Journal reported.

Griggs Store is a popular hangout in the community and it was crowded with locals who were there for breakfast. One of those locals was a Shannon police officer.

Sheriff Johnson said a man followed the woman into the store and began shooting, the Daily Journal reported.

The woman was fatally shot by the gunman.

“There was an on-duty Shannon police officer inside the store at the time,” the sheriff said. “The officer drew his weapon and fatally shot the suspect.”

He said no one else inside the store at the time of the shootings was injured, according to the Daily Journal.

Sheriff Johnson said that police did not believe there were any additional suspects involved in the incident and there was no ongoing threat to the community.

Shannon Police Chief Desiree Kershner said the officer-involved shooting investigation was being headed up by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI), the Daily Journal reported.

“We’re letting MBI (Mississippi Bureau of Investigation) handle the case,” Chief Kershner told reporters at the scene. “It’s still early and we’re still getting information.”

The town of Shannon has a population of about 1,800 people and is located 10 miles south of Tupelo.

Police have not yet released the name of the gunman or his victim, according to WAPT.
