Gunman Ambushes Newport News Officer And Civilian Rider, Shooting Both

A gunman ambushed and shot a Newport News police officer and a civilian on a ride-along.

Newport News, VA – A Newport News police officer and a civilian on a ride-a-long were shot by a murder suspect who ambushed them Saturday evening.

The shooting happened in the 5700 block of Madison Ave, according to Chief Steve Drew.

Earlier in the day, there was a domestic violence incident on Ottis Street where a male suspect fatally shot a female.

Witnesses and camera footage allowed the officers to identify a suspect and the suspect’s vehicle.

Several hours later, officers located the suspect’s vehicle at an apartment complex.

The officers created a perimeter around the area, preparing to search for the suspect.

That’s when the suspect emerged from a different location, near the rear of the perimeter, and opened fire on officers.

The unidentified officer and the civilian were shot.

Officers returned fire and shot the gunman.

The officer sustained non-life threatening injured, and the civilian is in serious condition.

The condition of the unidentified suspect has not been released.
