Former NFL Player Arrested At Toronto Airport, Charged With Defrauding Canadian Banks

Toronto, CANADA – Former National Football League (NFL) cornerback Buster Skrine was arrested in Canada on Wednesday on multiple fraud charges before he could leave that country to return to the United States.

The arrest took place on Aug. 9 at Pearson International Airport in Toronto as Skrine was trying to fly back into the United States, NBC Sports reported.

Canadian police said that Skrine had identified himself to bank management as “a former NFL player” and opened more than $100,000 in bank accounts using fraudulent checks.

Investigators alleged Skrine withdrew the money from the accounts before the initial deposit checks had cleared, defrauding the financial institutions, NBC Sports reported.

Canadian police said the scheme went on for at least nine months before Skrine was caught.

Authorities have said they believe the former football player executed his scam at banks all across Canada.

The 34-year-old former NFL player is facing 15 charges, NBC Sports reported.

Skrine has been charged with four counts of fraud over $5,000, seven counts of making false statements to produce money, three counts of possession of property obtained by a crime over $5,000, and one count of possession of property obtained by a crime over $5,000.

The former cornerback played 11 seasons in the NFL, NBC Sports reported.

Skrine was a fifth-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2011 and he went on to play for the New York Jets, the Chicago Bears, and the Tennessee Titans.

Records show Skrine earned more than $40 million during his NFL career, NBC Sports reported.
