Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department advised that homicide detectives developed undisclosed information that the suspects attempted to help Trenton Lovell evade arrest after he shot Sergeant Steve Owen and held two teens hostage at their home near the shooting scene. Lovell was ultimately arrested outside of the teens’ residence without incident.
The five suspects arrested in connection with providing assistance to Sergeant Steven Owen’s killer are, 31 year-old Lydell Herd, 28 year-old Robert Thomas, 24 year-old Richard Cowley, 27 year-old Larry Johnson, and 18 year-old Deshawn Peterson. In addition to charges for assisting the killer, Herd was charged with possession of narcotics for sale, Thomas and Cowley were charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, and Johnson with parole violation.
Sergeant Steve Owen, 53, was a 29 year veteran of the department. He was past the age of retirement, meaning he loved his job. He was well liked by his peers and the community he worked for. On October 5th 2016 the sergeant was on scene of the burglary call at an apartment building in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7, Sergeant Owen had his partner remain in the front of the location while he went around to check the rear. As Owen approached the rear of the building, Trenton Lovell shot him in the face.
Trenton Lovell then stopped over Sergeant Steve Owen, shot him repeatedly execution-style, and then ran past Sergeants Owen’s collapsed body to the front of the building where he then jumped into the fallen Sergeant’s police cruiser. Lovell then tried to run over Sergeant Owen’s partner, who opened fire. Trenton Lovell then rammed another police car, injuring another officer.
Officers were able to later locate Trenton Lovell and take him into custody. Lovell sustained one bullet wound and survived. He remains incarcerated pending his trial.
We hope these five arrests helps to send a message that anybody who aids a cop-killer will be hunted down and prosecuted.
