Father Opens Fire On Police After Son Gets Shot By Officers He Was Shooting At

Bronx, NY – A gunfight between a father and son duo and off-duty police officers early on Sunday morning ended with a 24-year-old man dead and his father behind bars, and the whole thing was filmed by nearby surveillance cameras.

The incident occurred at about 4:15 a.m. on Aug. 30 at the intersection of Valentine Avenue and East 180th Street, near the 46th Precinct station house, WNBC reported.

New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Patrol Junita Holmes said two NYPD officers had just gotten off duty and were walking to their cars when they heard gunfire nearby.

Chief Holmes said a 24-year-old Michael Rosado and his 45-year-old father, Rafael Rosado, were with a group of people in front of a grocery store around the corner from the precinct when a fight broke out, WNBC reported.

She said that when the dispute turned physical, the 24 year old brandished a handgun and fired it multiple times.

The chief said the off-duty officers, who were still in uniform, ran towards the gunfire and, once on the scene, “engaged” with the gunman, WNBC reported.

“The 24-year-old man fired several times at the officers. The officers returned fire, which struck the 24-year-old man in the torso,” Chief Holmes told reporters at a press briefing afterwards.

She said that when Michael Rosado was shot, his father picked up his handgun and fired several rounds at the officers, WNBC reported.

The officers were able to take the armed man into custody and rendered aid to his wounded son.

Michael Rosado was transported from the scene to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead, WNBC reported.

The New York Post obtained surveillance camera videos from a nearby building.

The video showed Michael Rosado got out of parked van and fired shots into the air with a handgun before running off camera.

A moment later, he ran back into the frame – pausing to throw his handgun under the rear tire of the van – before he put his hands up and then collapsed to the ground with a gunshot wound to his stomach, the video showed.

The video showed his father behind him stopped to pick up the gun from under the van.

Police said that was when Rafael Rosado turned and opened fire on the responding officers, the New York Post reported.

The video showed that as the officers approached, Rafael Rosado passed off the gun to one of the other people on the street with him.

Police have not yet recovered the weapon that Michael and Rafael Rosado used to shoot at the officers, the New York Post reported.

NYPD said that none of the officers were wounded in the exchange.

Rafael Rosado was arrested and charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and reckless endangerment, the New York Post reported.

NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is heading up the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
