Deputy Ends Gunman’s Attack By Hitting Him With Patrol Car

Muncie, IN – A violent attack on Delaware County sheriff’s deputies was brought to an abrupt end on Friday night when a sergeant slammed into the gunman with his patrol vehicle.

The incident began at approximately 7:45 p.m. on June 23 as deputies with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) were searching for 19-year-old Tarron Conwell, WISH reported.

In addition to having active warrants out of Madison County, Conwell was also wanted for questioning in connection with an unrelated case, according to investigators.

The Indiana State Police (ISP) said deputies were looking for the suspect in the 3000-block of Mock Avenue when they spotted him leaving a residence and moved in to apprehend him, WTHR reported.

Conwell allegedly took off running, then “pulled out a 9mm handgun and fired at the officers,” according to the ISP.

DCSO Deputy Carter Smithson, who was outside of his vehicle on foot at that time, returned fire, WTHR reported.

When DCSO Sergeant Tim Mitchell saw the suspect shooting at his fellow deputy, he “utilized his department issued police vehicle to stop the deadly and aggressive actions of Conwell and to protect the other officer on foot,” according to the ISP.

Investigators said Sgt. Mitchell’s patrol vehicle was also hit by Conwell’s gunfire during the incident.

They later released photos showing bullet holes in the hood and driver’s side rearview mirror of the patrol unit.

Sgt. Mitchell and Deputy Smithson both escaped the incident without injuries, WTHR reported.

Conwell was injured as a result of being hit by the patrol car and was treated at the scene before being transported to Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, according to WISH.

He was subsequently transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was listed in stable condition on Friday night.

It is unclear what types of injuries he sustained.

Delaware County Sheriff Tony Skinner has requested the ISP handle the ongoing investigation into the incident, according to WBIW.

It is unknown what charges Conwell might face in connection with the attack on the deputies.
