Deputy And Schoolteacher Wife Charged With 130 Counts Of Child Porn, Rape

Former Livingston Parish Sheriff's Lt. Dennis "Denny" Perkins and his wife, Cynthia Perkins, have been arrested.

Livingston Parish, LA – A now-former Livingston Parish sheriff’s lieutenant and his schoolteacher wife have been arrested on a combined total of over 130 charges, including producing child pornography and child rape.

Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office (LPSO) Special Operations Unit Lieutenant Dennis “Denny” Perkins, 44, was fired on Monday, one day before he was arrested in connection with the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office’s probe, WAFB reported.

His wife, 34-year-old Westside Junior High schoolteacher Cynthia Perkins, was arrested on Wednesday.

Cynthia resigned from her position earlier that morning.

The investigation, which was initiated based on a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, was a joint effort among the LPSO, the Louisiana State Police (LSP), and the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI), WAFB reported.

Investigators uncovered photos that showed both suspects nude with a nude child among the evidence they seized, police said.

The number of alleged victims involved in the case has not been released, The Advocate reported.

Dennis was arrested during a fishing trip in Toledo Bend on Tuesday, according to WAFB.

He was initially charged with obstruction of justice for throwing his cell phone into the river when he discovered that law enforcement officers had responded there to take him into custody.

He was transferred to the Livingston Parish Detention Center on Wednesday, where he was charged with two counts of first-degree rape, 60 counts of production of pornography involving a juvenile under the age of 13, three counts of possession of pornography involving a juvenile under the age of 13, two counts of obscenity, and two counts of video voyeurism, WAFB reported.

His bond was set at $1,675,000, and he was subsequently transferred to the Ascension Parish jail for his own safety.

Cynthia has been charged with two counts of first-degree rape and 60 counts of production of pornography involving a juvenile under the age of 13.

Her bond was set at $500,000.

“It is a sad day for us, for all law enforcement officers, when you arrest one of your own,” Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard told WAFB on Wednesday. “We at the LPSO work hard every day to retain the trust placed in us by our citizens.”

“This was a veteran law enforcement officer, one who had dedicated a lot of time and effort into this community, but as I have said in the past, no one is above the law,” Sheriff Ard said. “This type of alleged behavior will not be tolerated by me or anyone at the LPSO. I do not condone these alleged acts. I am disappointed.”

Sheriff Ard said he had always considered Dennis to be a family member and a friend.

“We are assisting and offering to cooperate in any way we can,” the sheriff added.

Dennis was hired by LPSO in 2002, and was the leader of the agency’s SWAT team prior to being fired from the force, The Advocate reported.

The Livingston Parish School District issued a statement about the Cynthia’s arrest on Wednesday, according to KALB.

“Livingston Parish Public Schools are committed to the safety and security of all our students and employees and is also committed to working with the proper authorities as needed through the course of this investigation,” the district said.

“Protecting Louisiana children is one of my top priorities,” Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said in a statement posted to Facebook by the LPSO. “My office and I will continue to do all we can to find and arrest child predators.”
