Dewey Beach, DE – Bystanders swarmed a Dewey Beach police officer as he was fighting with a drunken suspect and tried to help the violent suspect from being apprehended.
The officer was ultimately knocked unconscious during the Saturday night brawl, WRDE reported.
The incident began at the Starboard restaurant at approximately 8 p.m. at on July 24, police said.
According to the restaurant’s owner, Steve Montgomery, a patron later identified as 27-year-old Brandon Lewis was told to leave the business because he was being disrespectful to the employees, WRDE reported.
Once he was outside the restaurant, Lewis continued yelling at the workers and punched a doorman in the head, Montgomery said.
He then took off running southbound.
A Dewey Beach police officer was able to chase after him on foot and caught up with him outside the Bottle and Cork bar and concert venue several blocks away, Dewey Beach Police Sergeant Clifford Dempsey told WRDE.
An off-duty New Castle County police officer happened to witness the melee and jumped in to help the Dewey Beach officer with the combative suspect.
That’s when at least two men swooped in and grabbed the off-duty New Castle County officer, yanking him away from the brawl, Sgt. Dempsey told WRDE.
With the off-duty officer out of the way, Lewis was able to hit the Dewey Beach officer in the head, knocking him unconscious, the sergeant said.
Lewis left the officer lying motionless on the pavement but quickly found himself being confronted by the off-duty New Castle County officer once again, Delmarva Now reported.
The off-duty officer and a “concerned citizen” fought the combative suspect while other officers responded to the scene.
Dewey Beach police said they received a report at approximately 8:20 p.m. that an officer was lying unconscious at Coastal Highway and Bellevue Street, Delmarva Now reported.
Numerous bystanders rushed to the aid of the injured officer and tried to help him while police were responding, Sgt. Dempsey told WBOC.
When they arrived at the scene, they saw the motionless officer lying on the ground and a group of people fighting nearby, Delmarva Now reported.
Lewis was subsequently arrested on charges of resisting arrest with force or violence, two counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of disorderly conduct, and two counts of criminal mischief.
He is being held on $35,000 bail.
The Dewey Beach police officer and the off-duty New Castle County officer were both transported to Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, according to police.
The Dewey Beach officer was admitted to the hospital to be treated for a concussion, Sgt. Dempsey told Delmarva Now.
The New Castle County officer was treated for facial lacerations before being released from the hospital.
“We just want to thank everybody involved that came to the aid of our police officer,” Sgt. Dempsey told WBOC.
Police are still working to identify the men who stopped the off-duty officer from helping the Dewey Beach officer during the brawl with Lewis, WRDE reported.
