Councilwoman Under Fire Over Tweet About Spreading Virus To Trump Supporters

Colorado Republicans are calling for Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca's resignation for sharing the message.

Denver, CO – The Colorado GOP has called for the resignation of a Denver city councilwoman who applauded a social media post about spreading the coronavirus to supporters of President Donald Trump.

“For the record, if I do get the coronavirus I’m attending every MAGA rally I can,” a Twitter user named Susan Daniel posted, according to KUSA.

Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca, a self-described Democratic Socialist, retweeted the message on Friday with the caption “#solidarity Yaaaas!!” followed by laughing emojis.

But the Colorado Republican Party wasn’t laughing.

And neither were numerous Twitter users who called for CdeBaca’s resignation and said the authorities should get involved, KUSA reported.

Lx Fangonilo, executive director of the state GOP, called for CdeBaca’s resignation in a press release.

“Councilwoman CdeBaca praising a social media post calling for Trump supporters to be infected with the coronavirus is simply disgusting,” Fangonilo said. “There can be no room in our politics for wishing harm on Americans who have different political beliefs. Democrats in Colorado and across the country need to condemn this evil statement.”

Daniel’s original post has been deleted, but CdeBaca did not delete her comment and has not backed down, KUSA reported.

CdeBaca’s spokeswoman, Lisa Calderon, said the councilwoman’s tweet was meant to be a “sarcastic tweet… to call attention to the Trump administration’s downplaying of the Coronavirus outbreak as a ‘hoax’ no more dangerous than the common flu,” the Denver Post reported.

She blamed the media rather than CdeBaca for the kerfuffle the post caused.

“Rather than conservative outlets making a four-day-old Tweet their focus on Super Tuesday, they should focus their energy on demanding a competent Federal response to this public health crisis instead,” Calderón told the Denver Post.
