Convicted Killer Kills One Woman, Wounds 3 At Funeral Reception Before Deadly Standoff With Cops

Alexandria, LA – A convicted murderer was killed in a shootout with police at a senior apartment complex after he allegedly shot four people after a funeral where he had been a pallbearer.

Police identified the gunman as 59-year-old Augusta Moore, who recently wrapped up a 28-year prison sentence for killing his wife in another state, KALB reported.

After serving as a pallbearer at a funeral on June 17, Moore and other mourners met up at a residence in the 3300-block of Willow Glenn Road for a reception.

At some point during the gathering, Moore got into an argument with other attendees and allegedly opened fire on them, the Town Talk reported.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a report of “shots fired” at approximately 9:35 p.m., the City of Alexandria said in a press release.

Lakeisha Hayward, 37, was fatally shot in the attack and three other victims were wounded.

The three surviving victims were rushed to the hospital and were listed in critical condition on Monday, KALB reported.

Moore fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival and headed to his home in the 300-block of East Shamrock Avenue in Pineville, according to the Town Talk.

He then “barricaded himself and hunkered down to engage law enforcement,” the City of Alexandria said in the press release.

Police said Moore was fatally wounded in a gun battle with officers on Sunday.

“We can confirm after all attempts to safely have the suspect peacefully surrender, including hours of negotiation, the suspect chose to engage in a firefight with officers in a manner ending the suspect’s life,” the City of Alexandria said.

The APD’s investigation into the initial shooting on Willow Glen River Road remains ongoing, KALB reported.

The Louisiana State Police are handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal officer-involved shooting.
