AndrewBlakeMorris, MN – A station manager at a college radio station called the police to help shut down a conservative radio show on the University of Minnesota-Morris campus (video below).
KUMM’s station’s manager interrupted the radio show and told the hosts of “Deplorable Radio” that their use of the word “tranny” was a Federal Communications Commission violation – it’s not.
She said that they had to stop the show, and told student hosts Brandon Albrecht and Taylor Lehmann to leave the station. The station manager brought a university police officer with her for backup.
The station manager was wrong. There is no specific list of words banned by the FCC, but rather a broad guideline that relies greatly on common sense.
Specific words are often banned by individual broadcasting companies, and we haven’t been able to find a single broadcaster that specifically bans the use of the word “tranny.”
Surveillance video of the November incident was recently released by The College Fix.
The video showed the radio hosts joking about how the protesters on their campus are nicer than other Antifa groups because there aren’t enough of them to start real trouble, and everybody knows everybody else.
One host used the word “tranny” a couple of times while discussing various protest groups.
“You know, you can definitely, you see one tranny that’s trying to punch someone,” he said. “You know it’s automatically that one guy that you know I’m talking about. I bet you know. I’m not going to dox anybody and name them on air. But you two know if I say the tranny who looks like he’s going to punch someone. Yep.”
A few minutes later, the station manager went into the broadcasting studio with a campus police officer and shut the show down, telling the hosts they had broken FCC rules by using the word “tranny.”
“That’s a specific hate speech word never allowed on radio, in the same way you can never say c**ks****r on radio,” she said on the video.
On the video, the hosts looked shocked.
The student hosts asked the station manager if it was really necessary to call the police, and said they would have left if asked.
She replied that it was necessary because they were breaking the law, and she needed to file a report.
The College Fix identified the woman as the station manager. The KUMM website lists Carter Young as the station manager.
The student hosts were told their show had been “permanently suspended” following the shutdown, but the radio station had to back off and change their tune, according to The College Fix.
The radio station’s executive board sent Albrecht and Lehmann an email admitting the station manager’s mistake. They said the “language concerns have been determined not to be in violation of FCC community standards.”
Instead, the board cited other reasons for cancelling the show, including that it did not play “at least 2 new songs per hour,” City Pages reported.
University officials later said that no FCC violations occurred, but that the show was cancelled due to complaints from listeners.
They also said there were allegations that the hosts were broadcasting while under the influence of alcohol.
