The union said that Governor Scott should be back in his home state attending to the needs of the family of fallen Florida Highway Patrol Master Sergeant William Bishop, instead of trying to convince Connecticut businesses to move to Florida because of a more favorable tax system, according to WTNH.
It also said that Governor Scott was ‘bragging’ about what Florida has done in the past six years, in cutting $6.7 billion in taxes, and creating over 1.5 million jobs. In the same statement, the union criticized the Governor about Florida troopers’ pay, and said that Florida has the lowest paid troopers in the country with a starting salary of $33,977.
Sergeant Bishop was making $61,192.48 when he died, after 30 years of service have having promoted up. At the time he was killed, he was outside of his vehicle on I-75 during a traffic collision investigation when a vehicle fatally struck him. He was pinned under one of the vehicles, and later died at a hospital.
The Connecticut State Police Union said that ‘troopers who make the ultimate sacrifice protecting others should be fairly compensated so their families can survive after their passing.’ And they said Governor Scott should be in Florida with Trooper Bishop’s family, ‘mourning his loss’, and making sure he has a ‘proper and respectful’ funeral.
The union added that Connecticut state troopers will travel to Florida for the fallen trooper’s funeral, and that other other members of the Connecticut State Police are thinking of the family and praying for them.
After Sergeant Bishop’s death, Governor Scott said in a statement:
“We are heartbroken to learn of the death of 30-year veteran FHP Trooper Sergeant William Trampas Bishop while on duty in Alachua County.
Ann and I are praying for Sergeant Bishop’s family and loved ones during this very difficult time. Our thoughts are also with the entire Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Florida Highway Patrol family as they grieve the loss of Sergeant Bishop.
Every day, Florida’s law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect and serve Florida families. This terrible loss is a somber reminder of the work our brave law enforcement officers do to keep us safe.
Sergeant Bishop is scheduled to be buried Friday, June 19.
