Orlando, FL – A woman was arrested at Disney on Easter Sunday, and charged with disorderly intoxication, after she told a deputy that she could do whatever she wanted because her husband was a congressman.
Amanda Soto, 33, is the wife of newly-elected U.S. Representative Darren Soto, who represents the region in Florida where Disney World is located.
The incident began on Sunday night when a security guard noticed Amanda and her mother fighting at a bus stop in Disney Springs, according to WOFL.
Police said that both women appeared drunk, so an Orange County sheriff’s deputy attempted to help the women into an Uber.
But Amanda was screaming profanities at the deputy and the Uber driver, so she ended up getting arrested, WOFL reported.
Amanda was taken into custody and put in a police vehicle, where “she began banging [her] head against the window in what appeared to be an attempt to harm herself. Amanda was further restrained for her safety,” Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Cory Heller told the Orlando Sentinel.
In the police report, Deputy Heller mentioned his attempts to calm the hysterical woman.
“It should be noted that I attempted to calm Amanda numerous times from her agitated state and that even while attempting to speak with her she continued to utter that her husband is a congressman, therefore, she can do whatever she wants,” Deputy Heller wrote in the report.
Her husband released a statement that explained Amanda had been struggling with depression, and said that she’d recently gone off a medication with her doctor’s supervision, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
“Yesterday, she drank too much and reached an argumentative state with a family member, which led to arrest,’’ the congressman said in the statement. “She deeply regrets her actions and takes full responsibility for them. Amanda and her physician will be reviewing her mental health treatment, immediately.’’
Soto spent Sunday night in jail and bonded out early on Monday morning, WOFL reported. She was charged with disorderly intoxication, a misdemeanor.
