Tom GantertWilliamsburg, VA – A 19-year-old football player for the College of William & Mary is accused of breaking into the home of another student and groping her.
The incident occurred at about 2:45 a.m. on Feb. 8 a man, later identified as William & Mary sophomore George Eberle, broke into a home located in the 200-block of Matoaka Court, the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily reported.
Williamsburg Police Spokesman John Heilman said that Eberle allegedly sexually assaulted the woman.
Heilman confirmed that both Eberle and his victim were students at William & Mary but said they did not know one another, the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily reported.
Eberle was arrested later the same day and booked into Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
He did not take a breathalyzer when he was taken into custody, according to the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily.
Eberle has been charged with sexual battery and breaking and entering, according to the Virginia Gazette.
He was released on a $10,000 bond.
Eberle is from Califon, New Jersey where he was the star of his high school football team, the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily reported.
He was the quarterback and captain of his football team and also played baseball.
Eberle is listed as a kicker and punter on William & Mary’s football roster and played in 10 games for the school in 2019.
Williams & Mary Spokeswoman Suzanne Clavet provided a written statement from the college, WUSA reported.
“The university is aware of the student arrest and we have been cooperating with the appropriate authorities,” the school said. “In accordance with federal privacy laws and university policy, we do not comment on student disciplinary matters. Williamsburg Police is the investigating agency so any questions related to the case should go to them.”
