AndrewBlakeCharlotte, NC – A controversial Charlotte city councilwoman is under for tweeting that police were homegrown terrorists, and a post suggesting that 9/11 was fake.
City Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield tweeted on March 26, “Being Black in American under #45 has created homegrown terrorist wearing blue uniforms. #AReckoningIsComing”
Mayfield linked to a story from NBCBLK from Stephon Clark’s grandmother saying she wanted justice for Clark’s shooting.
Clark was fatally shot March 18 by Sacramento Police after fleeing from police after committing a break-in, then squaring off against them in a shooting position with what appeared to be a gun. It was actually a cell phone.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers said the tweet was inappropriate.
Mayfield has a history of saying outrageous things on social media.
On May 14, Mayfield tweeted a quote from a Huffington Post article that read: “Police are not private security for any white person that’s offended by the presence of black folks in our public spaces.”
In April, Mayfield apologized for a Facebook post in which she questioned if the 9/11 attacks were a conspiracy theory.
“I am still waiting for someone to produce pieces of the alleged plane that opened the doors for U.S. citizens to lose all privacy rights (from the conspiracy theorist in me),” Mayfield wrote, linking to an article claiming that a controlled demolition brought down the Twin Towers.
“I apologize for the hurt and pain that was created,” Mayfield later said in her apology.
On March 25, Mayfield retweeted another anti-police post.
The original tweet read: “White students are afraid of being gunned down in school. Black students are afraid of being gunned down in school…. and their backyards… and their cars… and at parks… and in the middle of the street… and on their way home… I know because I’m the parent of two.”
In response to the latest backlash, she posted to social media “while many want to condemn me for sharing my pain and speaking the Truth but NOT condemn these truths I feel they need to admit that THEY are complicit in the atrocities.”
