Chehalis, WA – An alleged child rapist stabbed a Centralia police officer in the head and back during a horrific confrontation late Friday morning, according to police.
The incident began at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 18 as Pierce County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) detectives were trying to apprehend a 32-year-old man on a second-degree rape of a child charge, KPTV reported.
Detectives located the wanted man on NE Adams Avenue, at which point the suspect appeared to reach for a weapon, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).
One of the PCSD deputies fired at the suspect, who then fled the area on foot, KPTV reported.
Additional law enforcement officers from various agencies flooded the area as the search for the suspect continued.
A K9 ultimately located him on Alfred Street shortly after noon, KPTV reported.
A Centralia police officer was trying to apprehend the alleged child rapist when he was suddenly stabbed in the back and head by the suspect, according to the LCSO.
Additional Centralia police officers opened fire on the suspect, killing him, KPTV reported.
A witness said she saw the injured officer walking past the side of a residence holding his face.
“They put a towel on him and got into the trunk to get their first aid kits and then the ambulances arrived,” she told KIRO.
The injured officer was rushed to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
He has since been listed in stable condition.
The suspect’s identity has not been released.
The LCSO is handling the ongoing investigation into the incident with the assistance of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, the Chehalis Police Department, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, and the Washington State Patrol, KPTV reported.
