Chicago, IL – Police have recovered the vehicle that ran over a five-year-old girl, a police sergeant, and another pedestrian on Saturday night but they have not yet apprehended the driver.
The incident occurred at about 8:07 p.m. on April 9 as a Chicago police sergeant was conducting a traffic stop on a red Honda at the intersection of Grand Avenue and State Street, WMAQ reported.
Police said the sergeant asked the driver of the suspect vehicle to exit his car.
Authorities said the driver refused and instead, hit the gas and slammed into a group of pedestrians who were crossing in a crosswalk right in front of the red car, WMAQ reported.
“He was asking for his documents and then the guy in the car, just like, took off,” witness Joshua Schaffer told WLS.
“He hit a lady!” Schaffer continued. “She flew in the air, like crazy, and the officer was holding on to the door. The officer got dragged, and he hit another officer and, like, sped that way.”
“It happened in, like, a matter of 10 seconds. All that happened,” the witness said.
Surveillance video of the scene showed the Honda stopped at the intersection with both its driver and passenger doors open and officers standing on either side of the car.
The video showed a large crowd of pedestrians were crossing the intersection in the crosswalk when the vehicle suddenly drove into them.
The police sergeant was struck by the fleeing vehicle, WLS reported.
The Honda also ran over a five-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman who were crossing the street, WMAQ reported.
The little girl was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital in fair-to-serious condition.
The injured sergeant was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with fair-to-serious injuries, WMAQ reported.
The injured woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair to serious-condition.
A fourth victim was also injured and said to be in good-to-fair condition, according to WMAQ.
Chicago police recovered the suspect vehicle later the same night near Superior and Wells.
However, the driver of the Honda has not yet been apprehended, WMAQ reported.
Police have not said if they have any suspects in the incident.
